At the end of the academic year, our colleague Maaike attended the CALM placement workshop at Ghent University. At this event, students present the insights they gained during their internship – so did Maxence, who did an internship at Untranslate. It was a special day for both Maxence and Maaike, because exactly 3 years ago, Maaike was here as an intern. Continue reading for an account of that day and a unique retrospective.
The workshop: finishing the internship in style
The placement workshop is the icing on the cake of the CALM postgraduate programme. Each year, the students share their acquired knowledge with teachers, fellow students and placement supervisors. There is the opportunity to engage in dialogue with all parties, ask extensive questions and network. For Maaike, this time it was also a nice reunion with Maxence, as well as the current lecturers and those from 3 years ago.
The internship in 2021 & 2024: what has changed?
In three years, a lot seems to have changed. In 2021, this event took place with mouth masks and social distancing. Back then, it was also necessary to stream the presentations so attendants could follow along online. This year, however, we all went on-site to listen and have lunch in the newly constructed campus garden. The internship itself was also completely remote in 2021. Colleagues only saw each other online, and there was no getting together in the office. Now we work together weekly in the office. Yet over all these years, there also seems to be a striking constant: the internship itself. It is still as varied and educational as ever.
The last word: then and now

“During the 3 months of my internship at Untranslate, I developed a lot of new skills and gained a lot of knowledge. Thanks to the plenary team at Untranslate, I learnt a lot in a short time. I have nothing but praise for the guidance and support I received.”
MAAIKE DE WAELE I 24 June 2021
“It was a great experience at Untranslate! I immediately felt welcome and at ease. The team was very open and ready to answer questions. I got involved in different projects and even got to perform tasks I had no experience with. I would definitely recommend future students to do an internship at Untranslate. The pace is fast, but you can learn so much in little time and the team is great.”
