An instructive immersion in the world of translation and multilingual communication. That’s how I would describe my internship experience at Untranslate. What follows is a brief recap of how I experienced six weeks of my internship.
22nd January 2024: A new beginning
The first day of my internship felt like the first day of school to me, where I embarked on a new chapter. Despite my previous internship experience, some doubts and expectations did cause some nervousness, as I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect at first. Fortunately, my worries quickly vanished, thanks to the team that welcomed me with open arms and I felt at ease from day one.
From the very start, I was assigned various tasks upon completion of a detailed briefing and on-boarding by my colleague. Translation, revision, subtitling, copywriting, quality checks, and formatting tasks. My checklist was complete! In many ways, I was able to show what I had to offer and refine my language skills at the same time. Moreover, I had the opportunity to familiarise myself with software and language technology with which I was not yet acquainted. For instance, I immersed myself in an ongoing project on term extraction and verification. First, the automatic tasks were for the Natural Language Processing tool, and then it was up to me to check, update and clean up the terms, if needed. It was reassuring to note, during my job, that artificial intelligence has not replaced us at all.
De-stress after stress
In addition, I had the opportunity to follow a course on web accessibility for editors. I found it useful and educational, as I had not really encountered that topic during my training. The course made me aware of the fact that not all websites and apps are readable and understandable for everyone, and that is why it is necessary to always keep the accessibility of digital content in mind.
To top it all off, I got to participate in some team building activities. From a pleasant boat trip on the Leie river and a delicious pasta dish at a nice restaurant in Ghent, to a city walk in Brussels ‘guided’ by me, there was no lack of fun.
Looking for an inspiring internship?
To conclude, I want to address all students who are still looking for an internship: apply at Untranslate! Trust me, you certainly won’t regret it, what are you waiting for?
