Since 2020, Untranslate can proudly call itself as the Service Provider of one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. With a significant market share of more than 10 percent, this manufacturer symbolises quality, reliability and continuous innovation. At the moment, the company is developing an advanced infotainment system, which will be launched in 38 languages across Europe. Thus, it is a large and complex project for which Untranslate is delighted to provide a multilingual interface that meets the highest quality requirements.
Technologies like the smartphone, the computer, or the GPS have become an essential part of the digital world. The software of these technologies is usually developed in English, and can be translated afterwards if necessary. That process not only involves translation but also a series of adaptations to make the software user-friendly, relevant and accessible to users in their specific regions. Therefore, we speak of ‘localisation‘, where we adapt an interface to the cultural, linguistic and technical requirements of a specific target market or region. This entails not only translating buttons, menus, and text messages but also ensuring their conversion to the appropriate units of measurement and adhering to the standard spelling conventions for dates, times, and currency. Quality software localisation also takes into account the representation of the translated text in the user interface or user environment, where the user and software interact, for example, a screen.
A digital achievement
A leading automobile manufacturer Untranslate collaborates with has demonstrated its ability in a highly competitive and evolving market, by constantly growing and revamping itself. In the past, the manufacturer used to rely on an external partner for a turnkey solution for the navigation system of their vehicle models each with their own expertise. However, at present end users are increasingly demanding, so the company now relies on automotive and tech companies, each with their own expertise. The advantage lies in quick implementation of updates and new applications, bringing various applications together in a user-friendly interface—a true digital achievement.
Multilingual software
The new infotainment system uses embedded software integrated in the on-board computer. Intuitive dialogue screens and convenient menus allow the user to access information on available services in a convenient way. To make this system accessible to all customers, Untranslate provides the software in as many as 38 different languages. A challenging but rewarding process, because offering multilingual software enables a company to expand internationally and access new markets.
Dynamic approach
Different software suppliers – each with their own culture and native language – use different formats to deliver their texts. Moreover, it is important that our translators comply with the terminology of the suppliers, without losing sight of the accuracy of the translation. To successfully achieve this software localisation, Untranslate draws up a thorough and detailed plan of action. Right from the start of the translation process, it is essential that we avoid any ambiguity, because any problem with the source text multiplies in all target languages. Therefore, we first critically analyse the basic English version of the software text and provide a comprehensive revision concerning spellings and grammar.
“It is important that the final product is uniform and harmonious. Therefore, translations must be consistent across all products and upgrades.”

Importance of context
Then our translators get to work. The input file contains individual segments (software strings) without any context, however for a qualitative translation it is crucial to understand the function of the messages whether they are a menus, dialogue boxes or buttons. This is why at Untranslate we use a specialised translation system. Based on a unique ID, our translators receive a screenshot for each string, so they can see the text as it is displayed on the driver’s screen. This screenshot also shows how much space is available and suggests an equivalent in the target language that is about the same length. Our Language Engineers verify whether the translation fits accurately using a specialised tool that measures pixel values. Thus, Untranslate not only ensures adequate interpretation of the meaning, but we also take into account length constraints, which is important in software localisation.
“Untranslate used a specialised translation system. This way, we not only ensured an adequate interpretation of the text for the translators, but also took into account length restrictions, which is crucial in software localisation.”

Complex workflow
There are several parties involved in the development and translation project which makes the workflow complex and the project management challenging. Thus, the new system also includes all kinds of innovative features, such as Smart Connect, Smart Fuelling and Smart Parking. These concepts need a clear equivalent in each target language, so that the user can see at a glance exactly what is meant by which term. Employees of the automobile manufacturer are also involved in the revision and validation of the multilingual software strings. This way, textual ambiguities can be clarified immediately and inaccuracies are not passed onto different language versions. Responding quickly and efficiently to changes and communicating transparently with all stakeholders is crucial at every stage of the development process.
Quality software localisation
By collaborating in a structured manner, Untranslate ensures high-quality software localisation and a successful project. With an eye-for-detail, our project manager ensures that everything runs flawlessly, while our translators meticulously respect the technical and linguistic requirements of the source and target languages. Thanks to our smooth cooperation, the entire team brings every release cycle to a successful conclusion. And these benefits extend beyond the automobile manufacturer to benefit all drivers in the long run.
“Even within a very short timeframe, Untranslate was able to deliver quality translations that met our high standards.”
