The MHEALTH4ALL-project is a three-year multidisciplinary project in which thirteen partners from nine European countries are developing an information and communication platform to make mental health care more accessible to refugees and migrants. Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the only Belgian partner in this project, collaborated with Untranslate for translation and subtitling of the educational videos.
84 million people in the European Union struggle with mental health problems. Refugees and other migrants are particularly vulnerable due to stress factors experienced before, during and after their migration. The MHEALTH4ALL project aims to make social and (mental) health care more accessible and to overcome potential language and cultural barriers.
Subtitling to overcome barriers
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is the Belgian partner in this three-year multidisciplinary project. The university is contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a digital, evidence-based, culturally sensitive and sustainable information and communication platform. Additionally, a variety of informative videos addressing language and cultural barriers in the healthcare sector will be made available on it. VUB reached out to Untranslate, inquiring whether we could offer subtitling for these videos in nine languages, within a pressing time frame.
AI and subtitles
To ask is to answer. Thanks to our expertise in AI and subtitling, we were able to provide a large quantity of high-quality subtitles at a short notice. How did we accomplish that? First, ten separate English-language videos were subtitled intra-lingually – in other words, in English – using a specialised AI tool. As a result, the meticulous and detailed spotting of subtitles was automatic. The output was then fine-tuned by one of our language specialists. And the result? Accurately spotted subtitles in no time at all.
Text expansion and length restrictions
The videos were subtitled in French, Dutch, German, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Slovak and Spanish. Text expansion, reading speed and length restrictions have a major impact on the quality of a subtitle. To deliver the highest quality, we used the most appropriate technology for this part of the project as well. The result was carefully checked and improved by our language specialists. We overcame the challenges normally associated with such complex subtitling project by using the most suitable AI tools. Also, the tight deadline and budget control posed no issue, all thanks to our innovative approach.
